Networking 101

September 13, 2006 · View Comments

In world where everyone is vying for your time and everything seems like it’s a sales pitch, there has to be a way that individuals truly care about the well-being of each other. An environment where the first response is “how can I add to value to you, your dreams and your goals. What resources do I have or who am I connect to that can help you reach your dreams.

Author Jeffrey Gitomer writes in his “Little Black Book of Connections” “to climb the latter of success, you don’t need more techniques and strategies, you need more friends.” That’s it! Not business acquaintances, or phony relationships, but friends. Men and women that you add value to their lives and they add value to yours. Relationships based on trust that has your best interest at heart.

As I write this post, I’m sitting at my local coffee shop and there is business going on all around me. Suits, laptops, and sales pitches dominate the surroundings around me. I wonder what many are thinking? What is their motivation? Are they trying to make the sale or to make a friend that has the potential to bring a lifetime of sales? I’m not sure, but you can tell who are being themselves and who are the ones that are working it hard.

Lately, I been reading and listening to ways in which I can improve as a net-worker, and here are a few questions I’m asking myself as I think about networking.

  1. How can I add value to the individual I’m trying to connect with?
  2. How can the individual I’m trying to network with trust that I have their best interest at heart?
  3. How can I improve my skills to build and maintain both current and new relationships?

What are your thoughts about networking? How have you maintained and invested in the relationships that you have? What areas do you think you could improve as a authentic networker?
