How to Shine at an Event Where You’re Not the Star

April 18, 2007 · View Comments

In the past five days I have found myself at two separate events where it had nothing to do with me or my interests. In other words, I was there to support my wife and her career. When I first started going with her to these types of events I felt completely out of place and not sure what do. However, the more and more I do this the easier it is, not to mention quite enjoyable. Here are a few rules or tips I use.

I’m not the Star

One of the things I constantly remind myself is why I’m there. I ‘m not there to do anything else except support and praise my wife. My presence is to be her biggest fan and make each event easier for her. If this is all I do then I did my job. Keeping this in mind, I do,

Look for Other Star Supporters

At every event there are others just like myself that are there to support their star. It’s easy to spot them. Most of the time you can find them along the fringes of the event while their Star is roaming working their magic. This is a great time to unleash your networking skills because most of the time they are so eager to talk with someone. You’ll have no problem having their undivided attention.

This is a great opportunity to connect with those that you’ll see at other events. If this becomes a normal practice for you I guarantee you’ll see these “Star Supporters” at other events.

Show Gratitude to Your Host

I always let the host or the sponsor of the event know how grateful I am to be invited to join my Star. It’s amazing how easy it is to show a little appreciation and pave the way for future events. It also leaves a lasting impression and memory that is connected to your Star.

Bring Your Tools with You

While I know this isn’t my event I still don’t come empty handed. I make sure I have business cards, pen and 3×5 cards for notes. You never know who’ll you meet that could be a addition to your network.

While these ideas seem extremely simple they can be life saving in making any event enjoyable for you and your Star.
