10 Ways to Deal with On and Offline Distractions

May 3, 2007 · 0 comments

The last couple weeks have been absolutely unpredictable. It seems like I’ve experienced every kind of distraction known to man (and alien). Nothing can be more frustrating than two weeks of making a lot of movement, but not seeing the rewards of any of my efforts.

To keep my sanity and not go in to information melt down I’ve had to turn on the “distraction defense system” Here are a few things I’ve had to do to coup with distractions.

  1. Check my email twice a day – early morning and late evening.
  2. Put all email newsletters, articles, recommendations in a “Read/Review” folder in my email client to read a later date.
  3. Limit my Twitter use and read the RSS feed at a more convenient time.
  4. Turn off the phone and return calls when it’s more convenient for me.
  5. Put all mail aside and go through once a week.
  6. Silence all communication software: Skype, IM etc. (I keep them all, but silence all notification alerts)
  7. Get away: Go for a walk, grab a coffee, find some silence
  8. Reorganize my priorities
  9. Focus on one item at a time.
  10. Realize distractions are normal and some of them you just have to ride out.

These are just some of the things I’ve done, what do you do when you find yourself assaulted my distractions?
