October 4, 2007 · View Comments

Anyone that develops content on a frequent basis can deal with what is has been labeled as writer’s block. When you have deadlines to meet, having nothing to say, write or produce can be extremely overwhelming. Fighting writer’s block is more about preparation then having a brain freeze.

Here are a few suggestions to put you back in the game as a content developer.

HONESTY

The hardest thing for many individuals is to be brutally honest with themselves. In most cases, writer’s block has to deal a lot with letting the well run dry. You’ve exhausted your resources or coasted on auto pilot until you’ve developed your good ideas, tapped in to your reserves and now there’s nothing. Being honest can get you back on track and a reference point where to begin.

EXERCISE

No you don’t have to become a marathon runner or a chiseled out athlete, but getting away from your computer, journal and going for a walk, run or bike ride can work wonders in opening up your creative impulses.

READ AND TAKE NOTES

Dust off the book, the magazine or even catch up on your online reading. As you read you’ll gather thoughts and ideas. make sure you have something to write notes and file them for later use.

JOURNAL

I always travel with something to write with. I’m never without a small notebook and pen. Keep a journal handy at all times to catch those moments when ideas are fresh. Many times if you wait to doing it later, you’ll miss out and often times forget.

WRITE

Make it a habit to produce something everyday. It may only be a sentence or two, but write something everyday.

If you implement these simple keys, you’ll always will have a well full of ideas. Much Success… and get writing!

Great tips! I keep several journals, personal, one for drawing and creative musings, plus I keep lots of running lists! When I think of a good article topic or title I write it down even though I don’t have the time to write the article right then. Later I can come back to the list when I can’t think of a topic. It’a a big help!

Jennifer, I’m a list fanatic!! I tend to write everything down in outline form.

Good stuff, I have a Moleskine with me wherever I go and even made a pen holder that slides over the cover so the pen is always with it.

I think meditation could help tremendously. Silencing all the noise around us is always helpful.
