The Weekend Reader is posted every Sunday with my favorite eye-catching, inspiring, innovative and informative articles of the week.
Hans Rosling and the Art of Storytelling with Statistics: “Hans Rosling is the Zen Master of presenting statistics. He’s brilliant. Hans proves what we all know, even if our teachers from yesteryear did not: Statistics are not boring. Statistics tell a story. Hans gave this talk at TEDIndia a couple of weeks ago. (I heard from friends who attended TEDIndia that the entire event was incredible; I must get there next year.) This may be the best Hans Rosling TED talk yet (all his talks are fantastic). He’s natural, funny, passionate, and he knows his points and where he’s going with them—and he’s very, very visual. And what a great stage—that’s the best TED stage atmosphere I’ve seen yet. Do yourself a favor and set aside 15 minutes to watch this informative talk. [Presentation Zen]
TV Networks, Brands and Individuals Find New Audiences on Facebook: “Television networks have been taking advantage of Facebook Connect to lure back viewers turning to online forms of entertainment, and several new applications have recently popped up to give Facebook users options for viewing their favorite shows. There’s still a lot of room for improvement, and all the big networks need to do is look around to see how some other brands and individuals are leveraging video on Facebook to increase fans, viewers and business in general. Ways to Drive Traffic to Your Store, Cause, or Business with Foursquare: ” If you are business skeptical about social media here is a new way to look at it. What if someone wants to find a new widget (you make, sell or have something to do with widgets) and this person comes to your place. When they get there, they use their smartphone, one of more than 291 million sold in the third quarter of 2009 alone. They will use an application for the Android and iPhone among others called Foursquare. This interesting application combines the use of the location of the phone, city maps, an increasing database of business, civic, and other locations, and taps the curiosity and competitiveness of human nature.
