There is a rhythm to everything!

Yesterday, I was browsing a bookstore and came across a book about the rhythm of martial arts. Like always, it didn’t take long before I began to think about the rhythm that can be found in everything.

Music is based upon rhythm. Dance is based upon rhythm. A football play is successful when there is rhythm between the quarterback and the receiver. Relationships flourish when there is rhythm between the two parties involved. Collaboration projects succeed when there is rhythm between the collaborators.

In social media, success is based upon creating and maintaining a rhythm between listening and engaging your community. Brands and individuals that have seen results in the social space are those that have figured out the rhythm of their communities. Their success isn’t built upon merely tools, but upon the ability to keep a consistent and responsive rhythmic pattern.

Social Media has a rhythmic pattern. It contains the foundation of any social media strategy. It should include:

1. Business goals
1. Listening dashboard
2. Communication strategy
2. Engagement strategy
4. A means to measure your engagement and participation

If you can create a rhythm to your strategy you no longer are consumed with what should I say, but how can I take the things I’ve heard and leverage them into meeting your business goals. It’s all a part of the social composition. Like music, every note means something. Every rest means something. Every time change means something.

In other words, you can’t create a social strategy without a listening channel. Communication without a content strategy will always lead to failure. However, if you can connect all the pieces together you rate of success will increase and move you closer to your goals.

What do you think?
