Foursquare Screen ShotThis week at SXSW, everyone is talking about location-based mobile applications. Apps like Foursquare, Whrrl and Gowalla have all been updated just in time for the world’s largest gathering of geeks and techies.

However, after the coolness where’s off the big question for any business is how can I use this.

Local Cafe Uses Foursquare to Reward Customers

A few days ago, I stopped in to Mrs. Potters, a local cafe and coffee shop for lunch. I don’t always use Foursquare or Gowalla to check in to every location I go to, but it’s very common for me to check in at the restaurants I eat at.

When I checked I was alerted that I had unlocked the special and there would be “$1 Off Draft Beers at Every Checkin!” Pretty cool, eh? I always like it when I see businesses include non-traditional and social media to there overall marketing strategies.

The tools are there, it’s just making sure you’re creating the right strategy that gets you closer to your business goals.

Here are just a few ideas on how businesses could use these apps.
1. Coupons
2. Inside information
3. Travel tips
4. Recommendations
5. Specials

How could you use location-based mobile applications to engage your customer and enhance their experience?

How are you seeing location-based apps being used?

We are using it to track and reward local evangelists, currently all are already clients but it's added an extra layer of geekness to their visits. “Checkins” count towards points earned for our regular Movie Ticket drawings.
