Developing Healthy Habits

Seven months ago I was in serious trouble. I wasn’t sleeping well, I became tired easily and staying motivated for long periods of time was never obtainable. As a matter of fact, a simple flight of stairs left me out of breath like an out-of-shape aging man… I was embarrassed.

Healthy Habits Begin with Honesty

The first thing I had to do was stop making excuses about how busy I was and face the facts head on. I could no longer accept that I was heading down the path of a typical everyday over-weight American. I had to do something!

After I accepting the facts, I began to develop a plan. I weighed myself and then made a mental note on where I wanted to be.

Executing the Plan

The next thing I did was bought Tim Ferris’ book, The Four Hour Body (affiliate link). I knew I needed something more than just mental stamina, but I wanted motivation from someone that consistently thinks out of the box.

I decided to try Tim’s suggestions to lose 20lbs in 30 days. Within this plan, I need to develop a habit of eating foods that wasn’t filled with chemicals and preservatives.

Within 30 days I lost 17lbs and I was on my way.

Educating Myself to Embrace a Healthy Lifestyle

During these 30 days, I knew that for me to reach my goal I needed to educate myself about food and nutrition. I started following a few blogs and listening to podcasts. I became intrigued by the healthy results (not just weight loss) of those that were following a more gluten-free, grain-free lifestyle. I learned along the way they that this way of eating was following the path of the hunter-gatherer lifestyle. This way of looking at nutrition I learned was called Paleo.

My Digital Inspiration:
1. The Paleo Solution Podcast (Podcast)
2. Latest in Paleo (Podcast)
3. Nom Nom Paleo (Blog)
4. Jules Clancy – The Stone Soup (Blog)
5. Rob Wolf – The Paleo Solution (Blog)

In this time of education, I started talking about my newfound knowledge and discovered I was working with two individuals that had made this change as well. Their stories of health results became an additional motivator.

Taking Daily Steps – The Path to Small Victories

I knew that my goal would never be reached overnight. I understood that for me to reach my goal it would take daily steps. I was honest enough with myself to realize it didn’t happen overnight and it wouldn’t go away over night. I had to be willing define success as small victories.

Mission Accomplished

Seven months into my lifestyle change, I have reached my goal. I weigh less, I sleep better and my level of motivation and productivity is off the charts.

My start weight: 234 lbs.
My goal: 180 lbs.
Total Loss: 54 lbs.

How You Can Develop Your Healthy Habits

1. Be Honest – It’s the only way you’ll obtain success.
2. Have a Plan – Success isn’t a byproduct of shooting from the hip. It’s planned and then executed.
3. Educate Yourself – Never stop learning.
4. Celebrate Daily Steps and Small Victories

Whatever you want to accomplish, whether it’s a business to launch, a career move or personal development, there’s no other way to success, but by developing healthy habits.

I find “that which is measured can be managed.” So I’m sharing similar success by keeping logs of nutrition & activity- I can’t imagine being as successful if I didn’t have the Loseit app + fitbit. And my rule of thumb: “if it wasn’t considered food 100 years ago, it shouldn’t be considered food today.”

    Great work man! Congrats!

This is a great post David. And I will be honest, I am in a similar situation. I used to be what you would classify a “hardcore” weight trainer. Then for various reasons due to life’s circumstances, I stopped. That was almost 5 years ago, and I really need a lifestyle change.
Good to hear that the 4hour work week it helpful. I think I’ll go pick it up.:)
