Let's face it, I love to travel. No matter if it's a small country town 100 miles down the road or a quaint historic European village, traveling invigorates me and bring my creative juices to a boiling point. One of the most challenging yet rewarding events is connecting with the locals. If you do your homework I guarantee you'll have a memorable time.
Do Your Homework
In every city there is the tourist trap that every traveler is pointed to. However, often times these places are like window shopping in which you never really get to engage the locals. With a little research you'll be able to discover where the local conversations are taking place. The secret here is to Ask, ASK, Ask!
Places You Might Engage Local Conversations
Here are just a few ideas that you may discover local conversations. Libraries, local grocery shops, local pubs that specialize in local music, churches, synagogues, and mosques are just a start. How about doing your laundry at a laundry facility or getting a coffee and pastry at a bakery. You may also explore different types of lodging rather than your typical hotel or motel.
Connect at the Table
It doesn't matter where your from some happens, guards are dropped when you connect with people around a drink and a meal. I can't count the memorable moments I've had around a table. I don't know many people that will refuse a meal or drink.
The Secret to Engaging Conversation is to Ask.
Have you ever met anyone that didn't enjoying talking about themselves. It's amazing what you'll be able to learn by asking about careers, hobbies, local news. etc. As a kid I was often embarrassed by a mother who never met a stranger to realize the older I get I'm constantly talking to strangers, asking questions and meeting new friends.
These are a just a few ideas I seem to always go back to. What are your ideas and tips in connecting with others?
